Ski-mountaineering (or ski-tour) was not a common pastime in the Caucasus during the Soviet period. With the fall of the Iron Curtain the fall of information, ideas and modern equipment from the West made it quickly a sport out of the art of very few adepts and connoisseurs. It is true, the number of cableways in the Caucasus approaches zero and you have to climb to a summit or pass to ski down from there, but then nowhere else in Europe you will find such an Eden of mountains - calm, lonely, majestic, without any scars of ski traces on the snow, except your own ones.
There is quite a choice of good places to ski in the Elbrus area, but the Adyrsu Valley is unrivalled one.
Elbrus - the best World ski mountain. It was said by Carl Egger — first person skiing down this mountain. This claim may be not true, because on thr classic climb route the slopes are often too icy, have many "zausenitsa", hard conditions are common, in general. With strong wind and night darkness it is difficult to have pleasure of skiing. For this purpose, it is better to choose a special programme with several days spending in majestic Adyr-Su and Adyl-Su Valleys. That is a realm of powder and breathtaking sceneries. Elbrus — it is first of all just a summit to climb through physical tiredness and altitude sickness. But look at the picture - there is a lot of possibities for ski-tour and off-piste.
Climb with ski. Choose late May or June for better snow conditions on Elbrus which can be hard blue ice in April-May. Two-three acclimatizing outings are done in the vicinity of Cheget and Azau ski-stations with their lifts (and the relaxed ski-resort type ambiance) to reduce the amount of walking with skis on your rucksack to the unavoidable minimum. You could choose skiing by not excessively steep, but certainly you have to be a good skier to try couloirs of free-ride zones. The skiing descent from Elbrus will demand good physical shape, rather than strong technique.
